Disney Dreamlight Valley is turning Halloween into a multi-week celebration with Season of Scares, a free update launching on September 23, 2026. Rather than introducing a new character through a standard Realm or a short friendship questline, Gameloft is building the update around six weeks of challenges hosted by Oogie Boogie, the iconic antagonist from Disney Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. Players can eventually welcome Oogie Boogie to their Valley, unlock Zero as a permanent Companion, work through the Haunting Elegance Star Path, and participate in returning Halloween events throughout October.
Season of Scares also introduces several permanent gameplay and quality-of-life improvements. These include the Event Board, Decoration Preset sharing codes, expanded Floating Island functionality, Photo Mode improvements, DreamSnaps Super Votes, new biome-clearing tools, and additional rewards from Olaf's Grand Exhibition. Here is everything officially confirmed for the update. Gameloft describes Season of Scares as a six-week Halloween celebration. Its structure is particularly important because Oogie Boogie works differently from most villagers introduced to Disney Dreamlight Valley.
Before beginning the Season of Scares storyline, players need access to three locations:
Peaceful Meadow
Scrooge McDuck's Store
Chez Remy
Once those requirements are satisfied, the mystery begins inside Scrooge McDuck's Store.
A strange mirror appears in the shop. Investigating and entering it leads players into Oogie Boogie's lair, where the new Halloween storyline begins. Instead of immediately unlocking Oogie Boogie and completing Friendship Quests afterward, players must first survive his games and challenges.
The official event description indicates that Oogie Boogie's version of Scrooge's Store will contain games and rewards that change as the event progresses. Players will also face situations in which they can decide whether or not to cooperate with Oogie Boogie's schemes before eventually reaching the final confrontation.

A new part of the storyline unlocks every week beginning September 23.
| Date | Week | Quest |
|---|---|---|
| September 23 | Week 1 | A Halloween Invasion |
| September 30 | Week 2 | The Oogie Boogie Contract |
| October 7 | Week 3 | The Ghost in the Portrait |
| October 14 | Week 4 | Rescue Mission |
| October 21 | Week 5 | Let the Games Begin |
| October 28 | Week 6 | Oogie Boogie's Big Game |
The schedule culminates with Oogie Boogie's Big Game on October 28. Completing the full Season of Scares questline allows Oogie Boogie to permanently become a villager.
Players therefore cannot simply finish the entire storyline on September 23. Season of Scares is deliberately structured to encourage returning to the Valley as each weekly chapter becomes available.
No, and this is one of the most important rules of Season of Scares.
November 4 is the deadline for starting the first Oogie Boogie quest, not necessarily for completing all six quests.
Gameloft states that players who begin the first quest before November 4 can continue the storyline at their own pace afterward. They will still be able to complete the remaining quests and permanently unlock both Oogie Boogie and Zero.
If a player completely misses the event and does not start Oogie Boogie's quest in time, the character will leave the Valley. Gameloft says he will return around Halloween next year, providing another opportunity to unlock him.
For players with limited time, the priority is therefore simple:
Update the game after September 23.
Make sure Peaceful Meadow, Scrooge McDuck's Store, and Chez Remy are unlocked.
Find the mysterious mirror.
Start Oogie Boogie's first quest before November 4.
Continue subsequent challenges when convenient.
Oogie Boogie is not the only The Nightmare Before Christmas character featured in the event.
Zero, Jack Skellington's ghost dog, can be unlocked as a permanent Companion.
Gameloft has confirmed that Zero appears during one of Oogie Boogie's weekly quests. Players who continue progressing through the Season of Scares storyline will eventually encounter and unlock him.
However, the official patch notes do not specify exactly which week's quest unlocks Zero. Until that information is confirmed through the live event, claims assigning Zero to a specific weekly quest should be treated cautiously.

Season of Scares also launches the Haunting Elegance Star Path, giving players another collection of Halloween-themed items to pursue.
The rewards focus on darker and more whimsical aesthetics suitable for building Halloween areas around the Valley. Confirmed reward types include new costumes and furniture, while two particularly notable additions are the Tricks and Treats House and Skeleton Scrooge Dream Style.
This makes the Star Path especially relevant for decorators who want to transform existing biomes into haunted villages, autumn neighborhoods, gothic gardens, or trick-or-treating areas.
Apple Arcade players should note an important difference. The Haunting Elegance Star Path arrives on Apple Arcade later in October rather than alongside the September 23 update. Apple Arcade Star Paths also do not feature a Premium Track, Premium Rewards, purchasable Tokens, or Moonstones.
The Halloween content becomes even busier in October.
The Haunted Floating Festival returns on October 7 and remains available through October 31.
Players will explore specially decorated festival grounds featuring both new and returning puzzles. Solving them awards exclusive seasonal decorations.
Because Week 3 of Oogie Boogie's storyline also launches on October 7, players will have multiple Halloween activities available simultaneously from that point onward.
The Trick or Treat event returns from October 14 through October 31, but the 2026 version expands how players collect Candy.
Players can find Trick-or-Treater's Bounty around the Plaza, while a new door-to-door system allows them to visit homes displaying a jack-o'-lantern outside and trick-or-treat directly.
New rewards include exterior decorations inspired by Halloween Town from The Nightmare Before Christmas.
During the second half of October, players can therefore have several activities running at once:
Oogie Boogie's weekly storyline
Haunting Elegance Star Path
Haunted Floating Festival
Trick or Treat event
Halloween-themed Premium Shop rotations
This overlap makes October 14 to October 31 the busiest portion of the Season of Scares calendar.
Separate from the free quest rewards and event unlocks, the Premium Shop is receiving additional themed items.
Confirmed additions include the Evil & Good Witch Bundle, featuring magical outfits, furniture, and matching companions. A Red Riding Hood costume inspired by Disney's Once Upon a Time will arrive alongside a Red Riding Hood Wolf Companion.
Stitch is also getting a Vampire Costume Dream Style.
Other additions include a Sinister Bridge Kit with a matching garden set and a new Companion Bundle featuring Lucifer from Disney's Cinderella. Lucifer has a special ability that lets him chase critters to gather rewards and also comes with unique Photo Mode poses.
These Premium Shop additions should not be confused with Zero and Oogie Boogie, who are tied to the Season of Scares questline.

Season of Scares introduces a permanent Event Board designed to make simultaneous live events easier to manage.
The Event Board is introduced through a new permanent introductory Star Path called The Astronomer's Journey. After unlocking their first Realm and speaking with Merlin, eligible players can begin this Star Path and earn astronomy-themed rewards at their own pace.
During that progression, players receive the Event Board and place it in the Plaza. It can display and track up to three live events, reducing the need to repeatedly search through menus.
This should be particularly useful during Season of Scares because several Halloween activities overlap in October.
Decorators receive several major improvements beyond Halloween cosmetics.
Season of Scares introduces Decoration Preset codes. Players can generate a unique sharing code for their Presets and give it to other Valley Villagers. A generated code remains valid for 14 days, even if its creator later modifies or removes the original design.
The Mirage system is also expanded. When duplicating decorations without enough copies of an item, players can place Mirage placeholders instead of interrupting the building process.
Floating Islands are becoming more functional too. Various buildings and stalls can now be moved onto them, including:
Tiana's Palace
The Boutique
Olaf's Grand Exhibition
WALL-E's Garden
Moana's Boat
Beast's Greenhouse
Kristoff's Stall
Mulan's Tea Stall
Tiana's Meal Stall
Aladdin's Gem Stall
A new Clear Biome function additionally allows players to remove selected categories such as furniture, landscaping objects, fences, and paths from a biome or expansion sub-biome.
Photo Mode also receives a substantial upgrade.
Players can save up to 12 photos directly through Photo Mode. Saved images can be viewed later, submitted to DreamSnaps when eligible, shared through QR codes, or posted to a DreamTeams feed. QR codes remain active for seven days.
Completed DreamSnaps submissions are automatically stored in a new DreamSnaps Archive for up to six months, and players can permanently pin up to three favorites.
DreamSnaps voting itself gets a new Super Vote feature. Players receive two Super Votes per day and can use one to vote for both submissions presented together rather than choosing only one.
Oogie Boogie and Zero may be the headline additions, but Season of Scares is much broader than a two-character Halloween update.
Between September 23 and the end of October, Disney Dreamlight Valley will gradually layer weekly quests, the Haunting Elegance Star Path, Haunted Floating Festival puzzles, Trick or Treat activities, seasonal decorations, new Premium Shop content, and major permanent improvements to decorating, events, Photo Mode, and DreamSnaps.
The most important thing to remember is the November 4 deadline. Players interested in Oogie Boogie and Zero should make sure they start the first Season of Scares quest before that date. Once it has been started, Gameloft says the remaining quests can be completed at the player's own pace.
With six weeks of Oogie Boogie challenges leading toward his permanent arrival, Zero joining as a Companion, and multiple Halloween events overlapping throughout October, Season of Scares is shaping up as Disney Dreamlight Valley's major Halloween event for 2026.
